Introduction of Fauji Foundation Education System
The post-war (World War II) reparations fund of Rs. 18.4 million, left by the British government for the Pakistan veterans, was utilized to set up a foundation over a one-off distribution. Thus, it was the start of an incredible journey of a socially driven organization fully self-sustained by its commercial investments that also supplement Pakistan’s National Economic Development. The core purpose remains to supplement GOP’s effort to support the veterans and their families, including widows and Shuhada for their rehabilitation. Fauji Foundation (FF) proudly spearheads this mantle entirely on a self-sustaining basis.
Our journey of growth has been phenomenal! Starting with humble beginnings of a 50 bedded hospital in 1959, our current portfolio includes over 1,800 beds nationwide across 74 medical facilities, which includes 11 hospitals, 63 clinics and 128 educational institutes, comprising Foundation University, medical, dental and nursing colleges, tertiary colleges, schools and vocational training institutions, which demonstrates our commitment and devotion towards the core purpose. FF is now serving over 10 million people as beneficiaries, contributing to 5% of the national population.
The endowment fund is prudently invested in the sectors of agriculture, infrastructure, food chain, power, energy and financial services. These investments not only generate funds for the Foundation but also contribute towards the economic development of Pakistan by focusing on the nation’s pressing needs, such as food self-sufficiency, energy security, infrastructure development and financial inclusivity.
Most commercial investments are quoted on the PSX and function under the highest levels of corporate governance and integrity. Over the years, these investments have generated handsome returns for their minority shareholders. Shareholders of these companies include the general public (55%) and the Foundation (45%), indirectly benefiting the wider population. The Foundation receives approximately PKR 30 billion in dividends each year, of which PKR 16 billion is paid out to the public. Our Foundation’s contribution to the National exchequer in the form of duties and taxes is over Rs. 170 billion per annum and ranks as one of the largest taxpayers in Pakistan.
We remain grateful to our biggest asset, home to 27,000 employees (over 75% of them are civilians), whose passion, hard work and dedication have made Fauji Foundation a success story for other social hybrid organizations.
