Introduction of Election Commission GB

Subsequent to promulgation of the Gilgit-Baltistan (Empowerment & Self Governance) Order, 2009, Election Commission, Gilgit-Baltistan came into existence as a special and constitutional institution.

Mr. Rahim Nawaz Khan Durrani took oath of his office on 20th October, 2009 as the first ever Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Justice (R) Tahir Ali Shah took oath as second Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan on 5th December, 2014.

Judge (R) Raja Shah Baz Khan (T.St) took oath as third Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan on 31st July 2019.

Elections for Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) were conducted under the Gilgit-Baltistan (Empowerment & Self Governance) Order, 2009 and GBLA Elections Order, 1975 (amended up to 2009) on manually prepared Electoral Rolls.

714000 voters were registered in general elections 2009, valid votes polled 328103, and turn out was 46%.

Election on 6 Women Reserved Seats and 3 Technocrats were conducted on the basis of proportional representation system of political parties.

Election on 6 members of Gilgit-Baltistan Council (GBC) were conducted by the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote.

Election of Local Bodies in 2009 couldn’t conducted on the directives of Federal Government.

Tenure of GBLA has expired on 10th December, 2014, and under Article 35(4) of the Gilgit-Baltistan (Empowerment & Self Governance) Order, 2009, Elections for a new Assembly should be held within 60 days after expiry date of Assembly.

Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly Elections 2015 was an election held in the province of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan, to elect the 2nd Assembly of Gilgit Baltistan after completion of full 5-year term of the first Legislative Assembly of Gilgit Baltistan. Polling took place on 8th June 2015.

After the completion of full five year term, the assembly tenure was ended on April 2015. It was second time after 2009 elections that new assembly elections held in across the province.

495 candidates from different political parties and Independents submitted their nomination papers out of which 50 nominations were rejected. 445 candidates took part in elections.

Polling took place on 8th June, 2015 without any break from morning 8 am to evening 4 pm. Total number of 1143 polling stations were setup across the province.

The elections 2020 were postponed because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has hit Gilgit-Baltistan.
